The Challenge:
bp needed to systematically transition operatorship of their UK North Sea Forties Pipeline System (FPS) to Ineos, whilst minimising impact on existing operational activities. This was to be completed within a very tight timescale of 6 months.

About Forties Pipeline System (FPS)

When the sale of FPS was concluded it carried 40% of the UK’s oil to shore from around 85 fields in the North Sea and several Norwegian fields on behalf of around 40 companies.

FPS consists of a 36-inch pipeline originating at Forties Charlie platform. The pipeline carries crude oil 169 km (105 mi), routing through the Forties Unity riser platform, to the terminal at Cruden Bay. From there unstabilised crude is co-mingled with natural gas condensate from the St Fergus terminal and pumped 257 km (160 mi) to Grangemouth oil refinery complex located on the Firth of Forth.

bp had over 350 employees, agency contractors and apprentices working on FPS, based out of offices in Aberdeen, Falkirk and Grangemouth.

Solution delivered by our Consultant

Matrixx Solutions provided one of their experienced consultants to programme manage delivery of the bp to Ineos Transition.  

The transition was due to be completed in a very tight timescale, so the Matrixx Solutions Consultant worked with the seller and buyer to establish clear Transition Governance from the outset.

They used Matrixx Solutions’ five-phase approach to comprehensively transition across the assets from bp to Ineos. This involved coordinating activities across 12 workstreams, from functions such as Operations, People, PSCM, IT and HSSE.  

Our Consultant coordinated and facilitated the Kick-off workshop and a further three critical workshops throughout the transition. These enabled the project teams to remain aligned and focused on completing agreed deliverables.  

Our consultant introduced clear risk management processes, to ensure that all risks to delivering the transition were identified and that sufficient actions were in place to mitigate or eliminate them. They also oversaw all internal and external communications: a critical aspect of all transitions.

Following the “Go” decision to complete the transition, the Matrixx Solutions Consultant oversaw the sign-off of all Category A deliverables, and enactment of the freeze calendar and cutover plan. All this led to a successful transition, fully completed within 6 months.

Business Outcomes

$250m: Value of assets transferred from bp to Ineos.

350: Number of employees, agency contractors and apprentices who were impacted by the transfer.

40%: Percentage of UK oil flowing through the Forties Pipeline System.

On-time completion: The transition was completed within a very tight timeframe of 6 months.
